Default What Liposuction can and cannot acheive

Is Liposuction Right for You? What Liposuction Can and Cannot Achieve

Is Liposuction Right for You? What Liposuction Can and Cannot Achieve

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY August 31, 2010

(PRLEAP.COM) Louisville, KY – When liposuction became all the rage in the 1980s, many overweight Americans saw this as an instant solution to their weight problems. But as the procedure evolved, surgeons began teaching their patients that liposuction is not a tool to lose weight, but is instead a tool to eliminate fat in specific areas that diet and exercise cannot impact. According to Dr. Lee Corbett of Corbett Cosmetic Surgery, a leading Louisville liposuction specialist, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure.

"Liposuction is a sculpting tool, not a weight loss tool. It cannot take a patient from overweight to slender," says Dr. Corbett. "We use liposuction in much the same way you would use a nail file — to smooth out the rough spots and give the area a better shape, so it blends with the rest of the body."

The ideal liposuction candidate, according to Dr. Corbett, is in good general health and shape. They have already used diet and exercise to reach or get very close to their ideal body weight.

Once they reach this point, liposuction is an effective tool to get rid of trouble spots that will not respond to diet and exercise. According to Dr. Corbett, the most common areas that he treats with liposuction are the lower abdomen, "love handles" around the waist, hips, "saddle bags," under part of the upper arms, and under the chin. These areas have fat deposits that often cannot be reduced through exercise or diet.

"Liposuction does not get rid of a huge volume of fat, but my clients are frequently surprised by how great their own before and after photos look," says Dr. Corbett. "For example, removing three pounds of fat from the lower abdomen, just below the belly button, can sometimes bring a patient from a size 14 pants to a size 10."
