Latisse Eyelash Enhancer

Latisse is an FDA approved drug for hypotrichosis, which is another name for having inadequate or not enought eyelashes.  Latisse Eyelash Enhancer is manufactured by Allergan - and has been making huge strides in the beauty industry since its introduction in early 2009. 
 
The Food and Drug Administration gave approval for this eyelash growth enhancing serum to help people who suffer from thin or sparse eyelashes.  Latisse is indicated specifically for enhance the growth of eyelashes by affecting the growth of the eyelash hairs over their usual growth cycle.

Latisse should be applied once a day (normally at night) at the root of the eyelashes on the top of the lids. It is painted on like eyeliner and allowed to dry.  Most people will start to see results in as little as six weeks. The applicators are small FDA approved sterile applicators that are used only once per day. If you miss one or two days, do not play catch up by applying more Latisse multiple times throughout the day. Just start using it as indicated on the product again - once a day.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
There have been some side effects associated with the use of Latisse. Testing the product out first on a small area of the eyelid first may be a good way to see if you might be susceptible to any of potential side effects.

  • itching
  • redness of the eye
  • eye irritation
  • dryness of the eye

     

In Extreme Cases - 4% of Patients

  • eyelid darkening - Latisse may cause a darkening of the skin of the eyelid adjacent to the lash line, which is likely reversible if/when the product is discontinued
  • A small reduction in the intraocular pressure (no symptoms) which is not cause for concern in clients who do not have glaucoma
  • Latisse stimulates melanocytes (pigment cells) which causes the lashes to become darker as well as longer and thicker.  However; due to the stimulation of pigment cells Latisse can darken the iris (center of the eye around the pupil) in some patients.  This occurs mostly in patients with hazel colored eyes.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Latisse is the only prescription eyelash enhancement solution on the market.  There are many non-prescription products available designed to help stimulate the growth of eyelashes - however, none of them are guaranteed to work, and will not provide long lasting results.
 
Latisse does require a written prescription from the physician.
 
Latisse active ingredient is 0.03% concentration of "bimatoprost ophthalmic solution".
 
Latisse can be prescribed by any medical doctor, however; it is best to have an cosmetic dermatologist, plastic surgeon, ophthalmologist, or an oculoplastic surgeon to see if Latisse is right for you.
 

 

 

 

 

The Average Growth Cycle of Eyelashes:
 
Each human eyelash lives an average of 5 to 6 months
 
There are three phases to eyelash growth cycle (like all hair):
  • Anagen - the active growth phase. Approximately 60 - 80% of the upper eyelashes are in active growth at any one time.  This phase can last up to 2 months
  • Catagen - the transition phase when the eyelash stops growing and the follicle shrinks. This lasts 2 - 3 weeks
  • Telogen - this is the resting phase and can last over 100 days before the eyelashes fall out and start the cycle all over again.

Latisse provides eyelash growth by week eight - sometimes even before.  Full growth with the eyelashes can be expected anywhere from week twelve to week sixteen, however; some people can see results as early as six weeks.  Most people see growth around week eight and the growth is very gradual.

Latisse works at the base of the eyelashes and when the follicles are in the growth phase or the "Anagen Phase" it stimulates the hair growth and also increases the length of this phase.  The results are apparent in 1 to 4 weeks depending on the patient.

More than likely it will take you several weeks to see your final results with Latisse - but when you do, you will see longer, darker and thicker lashes.  Latisse is not a permanent fix for eyelash growth, as you will have to continue with the treatment in order to achieve the longer lashes.  However, having longer, darker, and thicker eyelashes will mean less mascara and less make-up. 

 

 

 

 

 

Latisse and Lumigan both consists of an established medication - 0.03% concentration of "bimatoprost ophthalmic solution", which has been used for years to treat glaucoma.  This prescription medication made by Allergan, is called Lumigan. 

Available Sizes for Lumigan:  The prescription form - Lumigan is used specifically for pressures in the eye for glaucoma patients and is available to the patient in the following sizes:

  • 2.5 mL bottle

  • 5 mL bottle

  • 7.5 mL bottle 

Available Size for Latisse:  Latisse comes available in a 3 mL bottle.

One of the side effects of Lumigan in the glaucoma patients were that they had significant eyelash growth.  Allergan has gone through the rigors of FDA approval with this formulation of Latisse for eyelash growth and backed it with clinical trials showing that it did in fact increase eyelashes 25%. Thicken eyelashes 106% as well as darken lashes 18%.

 

 

 

According to studies with Latisse, people who used this eyelash enhancer experienced the following:

  • 18% increase in the darkness of the eyelashes

  • 25% increase in the length of their eyelashes

Marini Lash is the newest formulation for eyelash growth for Jan Marini.  This product replaces the Jan Marini Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner that was taken off of the market.  The Marini Lash used to contain prostaglandins (the active ingredient bimatroprost), but now has been reformulated to contain a propriety peptide blend to give your lashes the oomph the need to gain new length.

Cons:  This formulation does not work as well as previous Jan Marini lash growth product.

Instructions for Use:  Apply once per day in the evening to the upper lash line.
