PurTox like BOTOX with it
being made from a strain of Type A botulinum toxin. PurTox is not as yet
approved by the US FDA, and is currently in phase 3 testing for
glabellar lines
as well as medical/therapeutic indications. It is anticipated that PurTox will
be used to treat facial lines and wrinkles that result from underlying muscle
activity much like BOTOX.
PurTox gets its name
because the company finds it “pure” with not having any surrounding
hemagglutinin protein complex.
PurTox, like Dysport and
Xeomin has a higher
concentration
of human serum albumin.
The studies are still being conducted on this new toxin, and so far the
efficacy, safety and longevity all appear to be very similar to BOTOX. From the
studies done so far, PurTox seems to show a slightly earlier onset when
compared to BOTOX.
Puretox, a third competitor to BOTOX, is expected
to hit the market in the spring of 2010.
PurTox is a botulinum toxin type
A cosmetic injectable that reduce the appearance of facial
wrinkles. PurTox restricts muscle action that result in facial
creases or wrinkles. PurTox is pending approval from the United
States FDA. Mentor Corporation is the manufacturer of PurTox.
Onset of action of PurTox according to the Phase 3 studies going on is seen at
day 3 with a follow up extended to 180 days. In the Phase 2 studies the
patients were injected with 30 units in the
glabellar lines and the PurTox
showed 100% efficacy at 30 days. At 120 days the efficacy dropped to 50
percent. With
data using 20 units and also 10 units of PurTox showed that it might be
slightly less effective than with BOTOX.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
OF PURTOX
PurTox has shown to have a quicker onset of
action than BOTOX, and also has fewer antigens - which can lead to a
possible resistance to the product.
All the advantages and disadvantages of the aesthetic use of PurTox are not
known at this time.
